SCADA/Control: A step beyond remote monitoring

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. It refers to a large-scale, distributed measurement and control system. SCADA systems are not only used in industrial processes such as metal manufacturing, but also in oil and gas pipeline distribution and production, wastewater treatment and distribution, medical devices, maritime drilling and physical and transport processes. SCADA generally refers to a central system that monitors and controls a complete site but is comprised of different components.

Data acquisition, consisting of status data such as meter readings, open/closed positions of valves and switches, and pressure, flow, current or voltage measurements, begins with a series of RTUs (Remote Terminal Units) or PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers). This data is wirelessly communicated to the SCADA as required. Once the SCADA compiles and formats all of the data, it can then override the normal RTU/PLC controls.
